Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Film Genre

 Introduction

Genre in film are categories that define a certain films. Genre is used to determine the style of the show like how the characters are supposed to act, the setting of the story, and the plot as well, this is important to film because with out you can't make a film at all and with genre comes a audience who likes the genre of the film which means more viewers. Some examples of genre are horror, action, drama, comedy, and romance. But with the main genre there is always some subgenres, a subgenre is basically a smaller genre that supports and adds on to the main genre. Subgenres are important help add on to what the genre is for example a horror-slasher or urban fantasy. My personal favorite is the action genre because it is so exciting and cool to watch action movies.

The purpose of this assignment was to get an understanding of what we need to make a movie match or go with its genre. The genre we used was action thriller we choose this because we both like the action genre a lot and we had a good understanding of what it was. An action thriller is when characters find themselves in risky and tough situations and uses action sequences. Iconography the visual images and symbols used in a work of art as well as film. Narrative Themes are the films main concept.

Example

Genre: Action Thriller

Setting: Outside of Earth

Iconography: Light sabers, hero's, and villain, cloaks/uniforms

Narrative Theme: dangerous, risky, good vs evil, outmatched

Characters: Jedi and sith

Tone and Atmosphere: action, serious, incredible

Film name: Star Wars: The phantom Menace  Year: 1999

Reflection
I have created a bubble diagram with my teammate and our purpose for making it is to get a better understanding of how the elements of mise en scene work with genre. What we did on the assignment is we chose a genre and list the elements of mise en scene and used that to brainstorm what we needed for a action film. We used our laptops to helps us do the work and the media tools we used were google images. I would say I'm at an intermediate level. What I learned from this exercise was how to properly outline the elements of mise en scene with the appropriate genre I chose.
