Research Part 6: Sound Codes

 Research Part 6: Sound Codes

  1. Introduction

The sound codes in Joker often have a sudden change in sound, especially with the music.

  1. How would you describe the sound in the opening sequence and what were the decisions made by the sound engineer to support the genre of the film.

The sound in the opening sequence was very sudden and with those sudden changes in both cases it went with the mood. What the sound engineer did to support the genre of film was to highlight the descent to madness of all of Arthur’s struggles.

  1. Provide examples from the dialogue, music and sound effects in the sequence.

Sound Techniques and definitions

Document sound

Meaning established by sounds to support the genre.

Dialogue

Yo, what's up with your shoes, bro?”

It gives off a minor detail in the sequence, this achieves adding some life into the character that helps build the vibe or tone of the film.

“Come on! This guy's weak. He can't do nothing.”

This piece of dialogue is used to look down upon Arthur and his weakness.

The dialogue helps point out a detail that is subtle. However, this detail is important because it helps bring out some life of the character.

This piece of dialogue indicates Arthur and his inability to fight back at the beginning. Also, to show how weak he looks to everyone.

Sound effects

The Walla sound effect of the city and its people and the noise of cars.

The breaking sound of the board when Arthur gets hit.

The Walla sound effects of the city provide a sense of setting in the film. So, the sound of cars and a lot of people walking gives off a city vibe.

This sound represents the violence that happens to Arthur almost daily.

Music

A catchy piano tune this is a diegetic sound.

A sad violin at the end of the opening scene.

The music used originally in the start was all jolly how a clown would act but later when Arthur gets beat up by the kids the music changed to a depressing tone to show how miserable his life
