Save the Cat Beat Structure and Exposition of Film

 

Save the Cat Beat Sheet Narrative Structure 

Define each beat by describing the plot points of the film opening. 

Beat 1: The Opening Image 

The opening image is flashforward to a fight between Cory and Jamal. This immediately sets up a conflict in the story. 

Beat 2: Theme-stated 

Our film is about a high school boy trying to have a clear record until he and his former friend get into argument because he was bullying our protagonist. 

Beat 3: Set-Up 

At Piper High School Cory Williams, a freshman student, wants to have a good high school career but his former best friend Jamal and himself get into a brawl causing a Confrontation. 

The Hook 

The flashforward in the beginning that will leaves the audience wondering what will happen next. 



















Exposition 

 

Mise en scene 

Lighting: it is low at times but mainly middle. Costume: Cory’s outfit consists of a glasses, a burgundy hoodie, black cargo pants, and white and burgundy shoes. Set Design: in a house, the hallway of the school, a classroom, and the commons/cafeteria. Props: phones, backpacks. Composition: Rule of Thirds to show off the setting, symmetry to balance, one and two shots to focus on our characters. Color: Orange and light tan our school colors, burgundy on Cory to represent individuality and brown for Jamal to represent power.  

Dialogue 

At the start of class Cory and Jamal meet up again but then Jamal calls Cory a “big black monkey” causing a Confrontation between the two 

Narration/Voiceover 

Cory’s voice will be a introduction to him and his personal thoughts as well. Giving more details about the character.
